Harmful algae service

Stay up-to-date with the near real time Harmful Algal Bloom information service and the weekly Harmful Algal Bloom bulletin!

Water Insight operates a near real time Harmful Algal Bloom information service for the North Sea. Recent MERIS-satellite images are processed (within 24h) to chlorophyl-a concentration maps. Chlorophyll-a is used as a proxy for the abundance of algal biomass.

Next to the processed images, model nowcasts and forecasts of the Deltares algal growth and transport models are presented. These provide chlorofyl, Phaeocystis and salinity concentration maps. The model results are complementary to the remote sensing data because of the 24-h forecasts and in case of cloudy weather. Together this information provides an up-to-date overview of possible hazardous situations on the North Sea.

Weekly expert analysis of the chlorophyll-a maps complete the Harmful algal bloom bulletin.
